Bomb Discovery Leaves Mystery in Cuddy Valley

By Patric Hedlund

For the second time in two years, what appeared to be a small bomb was found in a field at the northwest corner of Dusty and Steinhoff Roads in Cuddy Valley.

Terry Brennan was working on his tractor Sunday, Dec. 23. "I backed up and saw it sitting on the dirt. It was about five to 10 feet away from the tractor."

Brennan recalled that his daughter, Leah, found something similar last year while walking through the same field on the way home from school. "We don’t know whether these are live rounds or not, so we called the Sheriff."

"It was a tear gas round… a very old round," Brennan said. "A year ago, Sgt. Barker took it…This time I called the sheriff’s office and they called the bomb squad. It took about an hour for them to come. They picked it up and drove away with it.

Brennan reports the object was about 10 to 12 inches long and about an inch and a half in diameter.

Brennan said what is troubling is that he is unsure where the rounds are coming from. "I think someone decided to dump it in the field. My concern is that we’ve found two…we don’t know what else is out there." Brennan said he is unsure who owns the field at the northwest corner of Steinhoff Road.
