Many Mountain Community residents spent unexpected nights in Bakersfield and Los Angeles after ice and snow closed the Grapevine, from 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23. That blockade lasted for about 36 hours, through 7:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25. At 12:50 p.m. the same day, CHP was escorting big rigs from empty the Flying J parking lot before the next storm hit. Finally, all lanes opened through the weekend, even through 68 mile per hour winds and lashing rains through the pass in the early hours of Sunday, Jan. 27, but the vital artery was closed again on Wednesday, Jan. 30 from 5 a.m. through 9 a.m. after seven more accidents, due to snow and ice.
