Alarms ring over privatizing libraries

BAKERSFIELD and FRAZIER PARK, CA (Monday, March 9, 2015 at 11 a.m.)— It is now confirmed that there will indeed be discussion of changes to the library system of Kern County as part of the Tuesday afternoon, March 10 review by the Kern County Board of Supervisors about consolidating divisions of county government in quest of efficiencies. Although the word “library” does not show up on the agenda, the conversation in public has finally begun. As we were going to press this week emails began arriving with titles such as “Kern County Library Threatened!” and “Alert: Proposed Private, For-Profit Management of the Kern County Library.”

Jerry Ludeke said in a note to her circle of library colleagues that there is an “imminent and not-widely-publicized plan to turn the Kern County Library system over to a private, for-profit management entity.”
