California bear attacks not reported by state

We reported last week that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s list of California Black Bear Public Safety Incidents shows 12 bear attacks since 1980. A wild animal attack is defined as “physical contact, injury or death.” We have learned the state list is incomplete. The last incident on the CDFW website is in 2003. The list does not include verified cases that have occurred in the past 11 years.
