It’s official: The games have begun!

Saturday, Feb. 28 marked the opening day of Frazier Mountain Little League’s 2009 season. A scrimmage game occurred between the Minors Athletics (coached by Matt Verdon and Kim Matthews, sponsored by Caveman Cavey’s Pizza) and the Giants (coached by Mike Edgar, sponsored by Gordon Construction).

Cool, blustery winds kept parents huddled together while the players hustled to the season’s first call to “play ball!”

The Giants took the field first with Ethan Gould pitching.

Athletics’ Fletcher Matthews made a base hit, then stole his way home for the first run of the game. Michael Bragg walked to first, then stole third. Ethan struck out the next two players to end the inning.

The Athletics’ were next to the field with Fletcher pitching. The Giants’ Joey Bizzini hit a double, then stole home. Fletcher struck out the next three players for a quick end to the inning.

The second inning started with a walk by Athletics’ Forrest Green and a base hit by Taylor Mason. Both stole second and Forrest stole home.

The Giants’ Breeana Gibson and Bryce Gros took turns pitching. Two more walks and an exciting “inside-the-park” grand slam home run by Fletcher ended the second.

Athletics’ Carl Stuart and Ronald Wolfe took their places as pitchers. Five walks and three stolen bases home tied the score between the teams.

It was fun and exciting to see the players, coaches, and the great turnout by the parents. Stay tuned!
