PTSO Convention in Pasadena on Wednesday, March 4

Gorman, CA (Friday, Feb. 27, 2015 at 3 p.m.)— On Thursday, when the story on PTSO problems at Frazier Park School came out in The Mountain Enterprise print edition, sympathetic parents from other schools began getting in touch with the newspaper. There is a strong need for parents to volunteer, we were told several times. Another concern is that PTSO officers need greater support in how to structure their groups and how to maintain their records.

On Wednesday, March 4, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a convention for PTSO volunteers run by PTO Today (www.ptotoday.com) will be at the Pasadena Convention Center (300 East Green Street, Pasadena, CA 91101). Online registration is closed, but walk-in registration the day of the event is welcomed. The cost is only $10.  Garage parking is also $10.

This national organization’s website, and the convention, offer tools and guidance for establishing and maintaining PTSO groups. There are sample bylaws, and guidance about setting up books to keep the records straight. There are also hundreds of fundraising ideas, and peer group mentors to share experiences and to help those just learning the ropes. There is also guidance for handling disagreements, and tips on working well with principals.

Please let us know if you attend. We are developing a follow-up story about the successes of PTSOs and the hard work parent volunteers invest to support their children’s schools. We’d like to talk with you about what you experienced at the PTO Today gathering.

Parents Michi Knight and Denise Saenz from Gorman Elementary School brought this to our attention.

This is part of the February 27, 2015 online edition of The Mountain Enterprise.
