Residents ask: ‘Why is hunting allowed in drought-dry conditions?’

Helicopters stuttered over the rooftops of homes in the Pine Mountain community at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Loads of water from Fern’s Lake were being flown to Sawmill Mountain to put out a one-half-acre fire above the village. The cause for the fire is still under investigation. But residents are vocal about their suspicions.

Pine Mountain resident Kimberly Wickers said she is “mad as hell.” Wickers wrote: “I am absolutely floored that this state, in severe drought conditions, would allow hunting season [here] this year. I would have thought common sense would have prevailed, but apparently not. I think all mountain communities in this state need to raise holy hell over this poor decision.”
