A husband barricaded his family inside their Lomita Trail home in Frazier Park about 1:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17.

David Medina, 46 asked his wife to call 911 to report unknown men entering the home while the family slept. Medina fired two shots through his bedroom door at unseen suspects on the other side, according to Kern County Sheriff’s Sergeant Mark Brown.

The family moved to the Lomita Trail home about four months ago, including Medina, a 14-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, an infant and their mother.

When deputies arrived they contacted Medina through an open upstairs window and asked him to exit the home to speak with them. When he refused, the SWAT team was called.

According to Brown, Lamont deputies tried negotiating with Medina for two hours until crisis negotiators arrived at about 4 a.m. with a SWAT team to secure the neighborhood. Neighbors were evacuated from nearby homes.

At about 6:15 a.m., Medina surrendered. He did not appear to be intoxicated, Brown said. The father was arrested on charges related to a felon being in possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner. Medina had a burglary conviction in Santa Barbara County.
