“There is nothing better than starting off the football season by returning a kickoff for a touchdown in the first 10 seconds of the game,” said senior Martin Salinas Friday night, Sept. 9. Salinas is an enthusiastic Falcon football fan, and he was describing exactly what tight end/fullback Patrick Moulder did in the varsity game against Vasquez at Frazier Mountain High School.

The extra point was made by Dakotah Ruggieri. After that, the Falcons were able to recover the ball and run for a 4 yard touchdown by Isaac Shillig, with the extra point from Ruggieri in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Forrest Pohl had a 30 yard touchdown pass from Isaac Shillig, ending at halftime with a score of 20-0.

In the third quarter, Moulder returned a punt for a touchdown and then was able to intercept a ball and ran it back 27 yards for a touchdown with the extra point by Ruggieri.

As if that wasn’t enough, Marquis Hunt scored an 88 yard touchdown pass from Shillig, with an extra point by Moulder.

Finally, Vasquez was able to score a touchdown, then received an extra point to make the final score of the game 40-7, with the Falcons solidly on top.

After the game, Coach Bill Shillig held a meeting on the field with the players and their parents, asking for participation in the campaign to give rides to students to the upcoming out of town football games.

“We need parents to step up for our transportation system. We have five away games and we are asking parents for help to drive to these,” said Shillig.

“Sure we can take the bus, but it will be cutting into next year’s funds for football and we [could] eventually lose our team altogether.”

The roundtrip to and from away games cost an average of $800 to take the team on the bus.

The next game for the Falcons will be this Friday, Sept. 16 at Frazier Mountain High School, against Desert Christian of Bakersfield. Their team is undefeated with a two game winning streak. Last year they went 9-3 and made it to playoffs.

“The game next week is going to be tough, just like every game we are going to have this season,” Falcon wide receiver Forrest Pohl said. “New games are a new challenge, but just know that this season, we’re coming back!”
