Saturday, July 2

• The City of Taft will hold its annual Fireworks Show and Vendor Fair from 4 to 11 p.m. at the Rails to Trails Park, 6th and Main St., Taft. Food, craft vendors, a beer garden, live music and bounce houses will all be part of the fun. The Fireworks Show will be at 9 p.m. Sponsored by the Taft Chamber of Commerce, 661.765.2165.

Monday, July 4

• Celebrate Independence Day with a 31 cannon salute at Fort Tejon in Lebec, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. The cannon’s roar will start at noon and will fire 31 times in honor of the 31 states in the union in 1856. Enjoy period children’s games, a pie eating contest, a three-legged race and an old time baseball game, living history demonstrations and exhibits. Adults, $5; 7–17, $3; children under 6 are free.

• The Ridge Route Museum’s newly formed Book Club will be reading A Passion for Nature: The Life of John Muir, by Donald Worster, 5 p.m. at the museum (3515 Park Dr., FP). Come join in the discussion and make new friends.

* Enjoy a Virtual Fireworks Display, 9 p.m., on the PMC golf course. A Bistro BBQ and kids activities will be available from 6–9 p.m.

• The July 4th Community Celebration at the Park at River Walk in Bakersfield is 6–10 p.m., featuring a free fireworks show (9 p.m.) and live entertainment at the Bright House Networks Amphitheater, 11200 Stockdale Hwy., Bakersfield. Food and drinks will be available for purchase along with games and activities for the kids.

Thursday, July 7

• ‘November’ by David Mamet, the second of the Summer Stage offerings by the Mountain Theater Alliance, premieres tonight at 8 p.m. at the Gazebo in Pine Mountain Village. This is a scathing political comedy that mirrors current events. It will encore on July 8, 13 and 15. This play contains adult language and situations. Tickets are $15, $12.50 for seniors and kids under 12. Call 661.242.6904.

Ongoing and Upcoming

• Filmmaker Julian Wilson spotlights Pine Mountain resident John Hood in the film ‘First Twenty-nine’ at the PMC Town Hall meeting, Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m. Hood helped to train the legendary Navajo Code Talkers on technical skills during WWII. The event is free and open to everyone, in the Condor room of the PMC clubhouse.

• The Boys and Girls Club Summer Day Camp is weekdays through August 12 at Frazier Park School. Lunch is provided through July 30. Sign up for one day or for all nine weeks. A different fun theme each week. For a full schedule and to enroll, call 661.245.3139.
