• Join the 16th Annual Ride/Walk to Remember through Cuddy Valley to honor and remember those lost during the September 11, 2001 attacks. Riders meet at 3 p.m. at Brennan’s Dream Weaver Ranch in Cuddy Valley (661.623.0356). Walkers meet at 4 p.m. at the Piñon Pines mailboxes. Motorists through Cuddy Valley are welcome to wave or park and observe the procession.

• A Pet Food Giveaway for families in need is from 9 to 11 a.m. at Shelter on the Hill Thrift Store (3538 Mt. Pinos Way, FP). A two week supply will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

• The Ridge Route Communities Museum Book Club will meet at 4 p.m. at the museum (3515 Park Dr., FP). This month’s selection is The First Deadly Sin by Lawrence Sanders. The story follows a New York cop’s quest to find a psychotic killer.

• The 18th Annual Kern County College Night is 5–8 p.m. at the Rabobank Arena (1001 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield). Representatives from over 100 colleges will answer questions and provide literature. The event is free and open to all.

• $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America by Kathryn J. Edin and H. Luke Shaefer is this year’s One Book Selection at the Frazier Park Library. Pick up a copy and join the conversation about the income gap and poverty in America. The discussion is set for Saturday, Oct. 14, 3 p.m. at the library. A related Storytime for youngsters is set for Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 11:30 a.m.

• Introduction to Finding Grants: A Workshop for Nonprofits is Saturday, Sept. 16, 10 a.m.–noon at the Beale Memorial Library (701 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield) in the 2nd floor Computer Lab. The workshop is free and open to all.

• Lockwood’s Ranch hosts the Destination Dinner for the Ridge Route Communities Museum. Dinner is Saturday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. but come at 4 p.m. for a tour. Historian Bonnie Kane will tell how the story of Hollywood celebrities, McCarthyism and the notorious blacklist are part of the history of this landmark in Lockwood Valley.
