• Love wildflowers? The marvelous California Poppy Reserve in the Western Antelope Valley is accepting volunteer applications for the upcoming wildflower season, March 1–May 13. This is an opportunity to learn and to serve. Two Saturday training sessions are required, on February 3 and 10. Volunteer jobs include gift shop and visitor center staffing, walking trails and leading tours. No prior experience is needed. All ages from students to senior citizens are welcomed. • Come learn about your feathered friends (and the upcoming Great Backyard Bird Count) at a talk on Winter Birds by Lynn Stafford, featuring the work of local photographers and a ‘birder’s basket’ raffle. • Embrace the dark on a Blackout Night Hike Saturday, Feb. 17 from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. at Wind Wolves Preserve. A moonless night makes for amazing star-gazing, while naturalists discuss nocturnal animals and lead sensory-awareness activities. Black lights may be provided to discover glow-in-the-dark critters.
