• Proud Falcons, celebrate yourselves at the Winter Sports Banquet. Dinner and the program starts at 6 p.m. at the FMHS Cafetorium on Falcon Way. This annual event is to honor Frazier Mountain High School athletes. Dinner is free to parents and students.

• Last call! Volunteer for the Wind Wolves Preserve Nature Festival, Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4. Many shifts and positions (trail monitoring, nature crafts, parking lot attending, face painting and more) available for this largest annual event hosted by The Wildlands Conservancy at Wind Wolves. • Hurry! Tomorrow is the last day to enter the Fifth Annual Mountain Youth Photo Contest. Budding photographers, 6 to 18 years of age, submit your photos by March 2. Over $1000 in cash prizes will be given at the show and awards ceremony Saturday, March 24 at the Frazier Park Library. An art sale to benefit the youth will be at Artworks Community Gallery in Pine Mountain Village. See submission form on page 9 of the print edition.

Ongoing and Upcoming

• Wind Wolves Preserve’s Spring Nature Festival is Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4, offering free family-friendly activities in an outdoor gala of enriching fun. Enjoy guided hikes, reptile exhibits, wildlife / wildflower viewing, family movies, virtual reality rock art tours and more. Last year 6,000 attended. This year they expect 8,000. • ‘How to Change a Tire’ instruction / demonstration for kids of all ages is happening Saturday, March 3 from 9-11 a.m. in the PMC clubhouse parking lot. Anyone can come! This is part of a series of life-skill events for youth and teens, but the entire family is welcome!

• Book lover? Ridge Route Communities Museum Book Club meets Monday, March 5 at 4 p.m. (3515 Park Dr., FP). The current book is The Wheel of Life by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. It featues highlights of her life and memoirs related to her studies in the area of death and the cycle of living. The next book will be Never Go Back, an action-packed adventure by Lee Child.

• Feel a calling to help others? Optimal Hospice is holding a New Volunteer Orientation Thursday, March 8 at 9 a.m. for openings in Bakersfield and outlying communities including the Mountain Communities. They need folks with skills ranging from simple companionship to hairstyling, sewing, counseling and even karaoke singing. All training is provided and they work around your schedule. • Want 75,000 more neighbors? L.A. County Dept. of Regional Planning will hold a land-use hearing Wednesday, March 21 at 9 a.m. in Rm. 150 of the County Hall of Records (320 W. Temple St., L.A. 90012), regarding the 19,000+ new homes and more than one million square feet of commercial space proposed (by Tejon Ranch Company) at Hwy. 138 and I-5 in Gorman. Select project materials, including a final Environmental Impact Report (EIR), are now available to review at 10 area libraries (inc. Frazier Park). Concerned individuals will have the opportunity to make public comment at the hearing; you may also email your comments to jsackett@planning.lacounty.gov.
