• Marvel at stars and planets as you’ve never seen them before as Pine Mountain’s foremost astrophotographer, Scott Rosen, presents favorite photographs from 40 years of shooting the night sky, 7 p.m. at Ridge Route Communities Museum (3515 Park Drive, FP). He’ll also share tips for viewing the Perseid meteor showers, which peak after midnight tomorrow night. See page 10 for a photo preview and more info.

• Worried about water? Mil Potrero Mutual Water Company representatives speak on the Pine Mountain community’s current and future water prospects, from the ongoing drought and our aging infrastructure; and about the broader history of water in California and the west. Everyone is invited to this free event, Saturday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. with the Condor Group of the Sierra Club, in the PMC clubhouse pool pavilion.

• Ella Dawn Jenkins is back with her cool aluminum harp, playing songs from her EllaHarp album, 3–5 p.m. at the PMC Condor Lounge. This blues, folk and pop-influenced artist was raised here in the Mountain Communities and is a local favorite whenever she returns!

* The Aging in Place Task Force meets 3:30 p.m. in the PMC pool pavilion.

• The Perseid meteor showers peak tonight from midnight on, when you might see up to 60 to 70 per hour. The moon is new (dark) and the Perseids are ‘rich in fireballs,’ so this should be the best meteor shower of 2018, according to www.space.com. See page 10 for more starry news.

• A Pet Food Giveaway for families in need is 9–10:30 a.m. (or until the food runs out) at Frazier Mountain Park (across from the Pentacostal Church). A two-week supply will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

• Show our precious Los Padres some love: join Friends & Neighbors Forest Cleanup Saturday, Aug. 18, 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m., helping the USFS with restoration at the Kings Campground/Goldhill area. Wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants, boots, a hat and sun protection; bring gloves, plenty of water and a lunch. You’ll meet at Motel 6 in Lebec and carpool to site. • A Chili Cookoff: It’s a Good Thing! Frazier Park Moose Lodge is hosting this showdown Saturday, Aug. 18. Chili chefs prep 8–10 a.m., cook 10 a.m.–2 p.m., when they face the judges. Chili fans can taste the entries starting at 2:15 p.m. ($5 donation). Cook-off entry fee is $20; more on pg. 17 of the print edition.

• Pianist Andrew Wong invites you to ‘Share the Joys of Classical Music’ at a free concert, Saturday, Aug. 25, 2 p.m. at the South Kern Christian Church (3224 Mt. Pinos Way, FP)—between Falcon’s Nest and ACE. All are welcome, and there will be a hymn medley at the end.

• Calling all Mountain Communities artists: Feature your work at Artworks Community Gallery’s fundraiser art show/sale Saturday, Sept. 15, 6–9 p.m. in the PMC Condor Room, to benefit the Mountain Communities Family Resource Center.
