•Join Audubon Christmas Bird Count at Red Rock Canyon State Park in the Western Antelope Valley. Meet at the Visitor Center on Abbot Road off Hwy. 14 at 9 a.m. to register. Parking will be at Hagen Canyon trailhead,then walk to the Main Wash riparian areas. Beginner to expert birders are all welcome. Wednesday, December 31 (First Day of Winter)

•New Year’s Eve at the PMC clubhouse is open to the public, $63.50 per ticket. The fun begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and dancing to the music of 360 Horns in the Condor Room. For reservations call 661.242.3788. At 7:30 p.m. a $14.99 buffet will be served. Once dessert is finished at the sit-down dinner, doors will open so all can enjoy the music and welcome in the New Year.

•Backlash plays live at Sue’s Tavern, 9 p.m.–2 a.m. (3440 Mt. Piños Way, Frazier Park). Listen to the sounds of classic rock while wishing your friends Happy New Year. Free food and champagne at midnight. No cover charge.

•Cafe Silva Bella will serve dinner from 4 p.m.–midnight (16241 Askin Drive, PMV). Reservations are recommended (661.242.2131).

•Madd Bailey’s Pub presents Vicki T & the Maddman (16200 Mil Potrero Hwy., Pine Mountain Village). Advance tickets on sale for $15 and $20 at the door. For more information, call 661.242.8439.

Thursday, January 1 (Happy New Year!)

•Start the New Year off right by getting outside to explore Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area (5301 Peace Valley Road, Gorman). Bring your own off-highway vehicle and meet the ranger at the north kiosk at 10 a.m. for a guided tour through the park. Meet park staff at the trailhead to the Oak Woodland Natural Preserve at 1 p.m. for an easy hike to the oak grove and learn about Native American uses for the local plants. There is a $5 entrance fee per vehicle and maps are free at the kiosk.

•Take the Polar Bear Plunge at McMurtrey Aquatic Center (1325 Q St. in Bakersfield) at 11 a.m. The cost for this chilling start to the New Year is $5 for the plunge or $25 for the plunge plus a sweatshirt. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Ages 7 and above. Yes, a swimsuit is required.

Saturday, January 3

• Fort Tejon’s Frontier Army Days Dragoon Program is 10 a.m.– 3 p.m. Visitors are invited to view the living history demonstrations of everyday life of the common soldier and civilian men, women and children at this mountain outpost. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for ages 7-17. Children 6 and under are free. Bring a picnic lunch. The park has no concessions (4201 Fort Tejon Road, Lebec, about 5 miles north off of the Interstate 5).

•Enjoy Pizza and Purchase Your Favorite Photographs at the opening of the Mountain Youth Photo Contest gallery show, 5 p.m. at Artworks Community Gallery (16233 Pine Valley Lane #203, Pine Mountain Village). All proceeds benefit the young artists. The public is invited.

Monday, January 5 (Back to School)

•All Mountain Community schools return from Winter Break. Classes resume today.

•Wildland Fire Science class begins today at Frazier Mountain High School for FMHS students enrolled in the program.

• Learn about the Stop Meth Now! Coalition’s impact on methamphetamine use in Kern County. The Kern County Board of Supervisors will hold a community forum at 9 a.m. in the board chambers (1115 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield). Learn the next steps to stopping the effects of meth in our county. All are encouraged to attend.

•Recycle your Christmas tree at the Lebec Transfer Station (300 Landfill Road, Lebec). Kern County Waste Management asks that you remove tree stands, nails and decorations (no plastic garbage bags, please).

•Join the square dancing folks every second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Cuddy Hall (335 Lakewood Drive, LOW). Cost is $6/class. Call Don and Bethel at 661.245.1882 for more information.
