Trade war with China led to missing Lebec recycle bins

The mysterious disappearance of recycle bins used by hundreds of mountain residents at the Kern County transfer site in Lebec may not initially hold the intrigue of a Hollywood movie plot, but it has caused major concern for mountain residents this month, and for those who keep the Kern County Waste Management system working.

The loss of those grubby but appreciated bins is directly linked to all the talk about a trade war with the People’s Republic of China from President Donald J. Trump’s White House in Washington, D.C.

Trash no longer accepted into the recycle market chain for export to China will end up stored—until there is no more room—and then buried in already overflowing landfills, Kern County Waste Management said. Metal and cardboard are still accepted.
