Four National Awards Won by The Mountain Enterprise

The National Newspaper Association (NNA) on Friday, July 10 recognized work by The Mountain Enterprise to bring the Mountain Communities quality reporting and editorial comment.

Singled out for national recognition in the 123rd annual NNA competition were:

  • A series of investigative reports about the Bor Ranch abuse of scores of horses, “Horses Starved in Lockwood Valley,” by Gary Meyer and Patric Hedlund;
  • Reporting on Pine Mountain’s struggle to obtain Kern County’s first firefighter-paramedic program, “Community Wins Battle for Firefighter- Paramedic Service,” by Patric Hedlund;
  • Editorial writing about the newspaper’s public service responsibility in “The Stinkin’ Public and Our School District’s Brain Drain;” and
  • The May 2008 “Secret Negotiation between Tejon Developers and ‘Big Green’ Groups Sprouts Deal,” by Patric Hedlund.

Two years ago this newspaper won three awards from the California Newspaper Publisher’s Association (CNPA) for excellence in reporting.

“These awards really recognize all the outstanding community people who help us to report the news each week,” Managing Editor Patric Hedlund said. “Quality journalism is a result of all those who use the newspaper to create a dialogue with their neighbors about important local issues.”

This is part of the July 17, 2009 online edition of The Mountain Enterprise.
