100 cars reported trapped near ‘Y’

Final count was 20—but those without chains were delayed

Emergency radios crackled on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 1:48 p.m., with those now-familiar words: “Vehicle rollover, multiple vehicles stuck on Mil Potrero Highway in the ice, just east of Yellowstone.”

California Higway Patrol’s preliminary estimate was “100 vehicles stuck, unable to respond…” By 3:30 p.m. that estimate was revised to about 20 stranded vehicles.
