Bomb Scare on Mount Pinos

MOUNT PINOS (Friay, Feb. 12, 2011, 4 p.m.)—A bomb scare which brought out the Kern County Sheriff’s bomb squad from downtown Bakersfield is over. An ammunition can covered in rocks at the Sierra Vista turnout, not far from the Buena Vista parking lot on Mount Pinos, was discovered about noon. Sheriffs were alerted and they decided it was suspicious. The bomb squad was summoned, which deployed a robot with a water cannon to explode any incendiary material within the ammo case. No explosion occured. What popped out was some children’s toys, a notebook signed by 18 previous discoverers of the stash, and a note beginning, "Congratulations, you have found a geocache!" Look for the full story in The Mountain Enterprise newspaper, with photos, next week.
