As reporters, we’re used to seeing Battalion Chief Kirk Kushen show up at rescue operations to find people lost in the mountains; at medical emergencies; at grass fires raging 50 miles per hour across hillsides; and struggling to save peoples homes from burning.

He is a steady incident commander in calm control, often grimly serious.
