Stay Healthy: Health Fair Offers Free Services

By Patric Hedlund

May we take a moment to praise good work and urge you to benefit from the thoughtfulness of your neighbors?

Militsa Brennan of Cuddy Valley’s Dream Weaver Ranch has been working with the Girl Scouts for several years to coordinate health fairs. This year she has the support of Mountain Memories Association (MMA) and the Southwest Health Care District (SWHCD) to bring essential health opportunities to the mountain.

On Monday, Aug. 8 there will be free child immunizations, including whooping cough (pertussis), for infants through age 18 at Frazier Park School from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. An outbreak of the disease nationwide has led school districts to require the shot for returning to school this year. Bring your immunization cards.

On Saturday, Aug. 13 Brennan and Lori Hallmark are working together to bring you the Mountain Communities Health Fair, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church (6700 Lakewood Drive, Lake of the Woods).

This is a unique opportunity to get that mammogram, conveniently and without cost, right here on the mountain. Call Jeannette Tropia (at 245-1952) for an appointment. Adult lab tests (for cholesterol and other measures) will be available, along with screening for strokes, bone density and free information about staying fit.

MMA raises money through Fiesta Days to help provide these services. SWHCD is a tax district which distributes healthcare-related funding to the local community.

This is part of the July 29, 2011 online edition of The Mountain Enterprise.
