SUV Explodes on I-5 Near El Tejon CHP

UPDATE-LEBEC (Thursday, March 19, 2010, 9:13 a.m.)—Preliminary CHP reports indicate that at 8:44 a.m. a subject or subjects were running from a grey or black Chevrolet Suburban on the right hand shoulder of the Interstate 5 at the Grapevine, near the CHP Fort Tejon Station. The vehicle was on fire, possibly exploding. Firefighters arrived by 8:52 a.m. A Rider Towing truck was on scene by 8:56 a.m. Updates will be provided shortly. See witness report below.

LEBEC (Thursday, March 18, 2010, 9:07 a.m.)—Witness Chuck Noble reports that at about 8:50 a.m. what appears to be a Ford Explorer exploded on the Interstate 5 freeway roughly parallel with the CHP Fort Tejon Station. A man was seen running from the vehicle. "It looked like the whole engine was on fire," Noble said.
