Playoffs Begin for Mountain’s Champs

By Coach Jerry Quick

The Falcon varsity baseball team finished the league season with victories over Rosamond and California City to win the High Desert League title with a league record of 10-0.

On Tuesday, May 7, Frazier Mountain High School hosted second place Rosamond, knowing a win would give them their first league title in baseball.

The Roadrunners let the home team know that it wasn’t going to be easy by scoring two runs in the first inning.

The Falcons came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, when Robbie Stowell knocked in Josh Regan, who had singled, and Thomas Nierhoff followed with the first of his three doubles on the day, scoring two runs.

The score remained at 3-2 until the bottom of the 5th, when the Falcons got run-scoring doubles from Casey Holcomb and Nierhoff, sandwiched around a run-scoring single by Stowell, to take a 5-2 lead.

The Roadrunners scored one run in the 7th and had the tying run at the plate, when Stowell struck out the final batter to preserve the win.

On Thursday, May 9, the Falcons finished their league season with a game at California City. The outcome was never in doubt as the Falcons finished off the Ravens in five innings, 13-0.

Josh Regan pitched a 4-hit shutout, striking out six Raven batters. Andrew Penner and Stephen Downs had three hits apiece.

Playoffs begin with a home game. We play at home against The Academy for Academic Excellence this Friday, May 17 at 3:15 p.m.  Come out to cheer us on.
