Lebec, Frazier Park (Friday, Jan. 17, 2020 at 7:35 a.m.)— “Roads are too icy going into Pine Mountain Club to send buses,” El Tejon Unified School District Superintendent Sara Haflich has just announced, “School is cancelled today.”  Now get out there and make dancing snowpeople, all you liberated students!  In reality, the snow is only about one inch deep, and they will have to be fairly skinny snow folk. However, the temperature is below freezing at this hour, and motorists are warned that even plowed and cindered roads can be icy. Drive slowly and safely today.

Private plows have continued to offer kind miracles in opening up private roads in Frazier Park and Lake of the Woods. Berm removal continues in Pine Mountain Club, often by weary owners, and POA plowers have been greeted with great gratitude.

The Grapevine, Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Monday, Dec. 31 2019 at 9 a.m.)— The second storm promised to hit on Monday passed us by. In its place is a beautiful, sunny day. Enjoy the thaw. It is the last day of 2019.

The Grapevine, Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Monday, Dec. 30 2019 at 5:30 a.m.)—The CHP is still reported to be pacing traffic over the Grapevine. Surface roads are icy. Plan ahead, drive slowly. Get to your destination safely.

The Grapevine, Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Monday, Dec. 30 2019 at 4:20 a.m.)—CHP is pacing traffic across the northbound Grapevine at this hour, 4:20 a.m.. according to CalTrans, but the good news is that the Grapevine is open.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019 at 6 p.m.)—Mountain weatherspotter Jerry Ferris has sent out this Advisory from National Weather Service, effective from 10 p.m. Sunday night to 4 p.m. Monday. They anticipate 2 inches of new snow and ice accumulations. Considering that many of us on the mountain are still digging out from under about 30″ of snow accumulation, this sounds relatively mild. However, it will complicate morning commutes, and is likely to leave roads icy. Please use your traction devices—especially on curving mountain road areas. such as Mil Potrero Highway and Woodland Drive. Plan ahead to leave early so you can drive very s-l-o-w-l-y. Here’s the alert from NWS:

* WHAT…Snow and ice expected. Generally up to 2 inches of new snow accumulations possible. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

* WHERE…Fort Tejon Area. Roads that may be affected include Interstate 5 through the Grapevine. Snow level: starting near 5000 feet but lowering to 3500 feet Monday morning.

* WHEN…From 10 PM this evening to 4 PM PST Monday.

* IMPACTS…Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact travelers.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019 at 8 a.m.)—The Interstate 5 Grapevine continues to be open. Surface roads are icy this morning. Snow melt yesterday froze overnight and has created dangerous black ice in many places on surface streets. Please drive slowly and carefully. Have your snow chains or other traction devices with you. Please be safe. Scroll down for the National Weather Service weather report. A new storm is predicted to blow in Sunday night.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019 at 11 a.m.)— The Grapevine is open in both directions and Mil Potrero Highway is now reported to be plowed and sanded for safe driving.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Friday, Dec. 27, 2019 at 2:52 p.m.)— Traffic on north and south lanes of the Interstate 5 Grapevine are now flowing.

Many surface streets and trails are unplowed or very icy. Many people in Pine Mountain Club are confronted with monumental berms from the road plowing. The berms make it unlikely many of them can exit their drives to enter the roadway. Mil Potrero Highway is reported as hosting a series of spin-out accidents this afternoon. A neighbor reports a vehicle got stuck on ice on Nadlehorn in PMC. Please use traction devices and drive very carefully. You need AWD and 4WD with traction gear to be safe this afternoon and evening. Scroll Down to see full weather report from NWS.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Friday, Dec. 27, 2019 at 11:57 a.m.)—The Interstate 5 is open again, with escorts by California Highway Patrol across the Grapevine. Be sure to have chains in your car to travel in the Mountain Communities. Drive carefully. Temperatures are still low and roads are icy.
Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Friday, Dec. 27, 2019 at 10:38 a.m.)—The Grapevine over Interstate 5 is still closed. Temperatures, even at their warmest today, will still be below freezing.  To the west, Pine Mountain Club is still asking people to stay home if they can, indicating that driveways to homes are still walled in by snow berms, and Mil Potrero Highway is not safe because of thick ice. Use chains if you must go out, they warn, adding you should also take blankets, warm clothes, food and water, just in case you get stuck. Chain devices on your shoes are also wise, as it is easy to slip on ice even while walking or working outside.

But there is good news for Lebec: PG&E turned power on again to Lebec at 3:35 a.m. this morning. “It was a miserable day,” said Chandra Mead, speaking of enduring below freezing temperatures from Christmas night through today. A power line went down in Lebec Christmas night. With the Grapevine closed to traffic, it was not possible to get work trucks up to fix the problem immediately. Scroll down for today’s detailed National Weather Service forecast.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Friday, Dec. 27, 2019 at 4:55 a.m.)— The Grapevine is still closed this morning at 4:55 a.m. Surface roads will be icy this morning. Plowing and cindering operations will be catching up today, but most mountain roads will be icy this early morning. Drive very carefully, and take it slowly.  Scroll below for detailed National Weather Service forecast.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at 5:22 p.m.)— The Grapevine is still closed as night falls. It is unwise to use surface roads in many sections of the Mountain Communities this evening as the snow continues to fall and plows have not thoroughly cleared and cindered. Be very careful of ice, and be equipped with chains. If you can postpone trips out, do so. Even walking through some of the higher snowfall areas can be hazardous this evening.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at 3:48 p.m.)—Interstate 5 is still closed. Highway 166 to the 101 is not an option at the moment, according to CalTrans Road Conditions, as the 166 is closed between the 33 and Ojai. Snow is still coming down in the Mountain Communities, but after 3 p.m. became lighter and wetter.

Travel in the region is difficult today. It is advised to postpone trips if possible. Snow plows do not appear to be keeping up with the snowfall in many areas.

Snow depths in flat areas of Frazier Park are reported at 24″, and at 6,000 feet in Pine Mountain Club are about 30″ or more. That will vary depending on elevation. An “urgent alert” has gone out from PMCPOA asking people to be aware that it is dangerous to play in the roadway, as snowplows have poor visibility and cannot stop suddenly. They can accidentally bump into people. Please supervise your children closely. Keep them out of the road. Don’t risk an accident.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at 9:09 a.m.) — Yes, it’s true. The Interstate-5 over the Grapevine is a nonstarter, north and south at this moment. The Grapevine is closed from SR 126 (to the south, in Los Angeles County) to 5 miles south of SR99 (to the north, in Kern County). We’ll keep checking.  Scroll down for NWS forecast.

P.S. The 166, 33 (west) and 58 are also reported to be closed. Think about it before believing WAZE or Google GPS driving guides. They seem to know I-5 is closed, but they do not seem to understand that the 166 and 33 are not priorities for plowing at this time, before the I-5 is open. “Shelter in place” today, with friends, family and good cheer. In PMC the clubhouse is closed. C’mon, you know Scrabble, Uncle Wiggly and Monopoly are a great way to get into some fun conversations with the kids!

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at 6 a.m.) —Lebec resident Chandra Mead reports her son “got out with his 4×4 and said he saw three downed trees on his little street, and a down power line at Lebec Oaks Road and Canyon.” She said the report is that “Lebec Road is a mess, with the road blocked by semis near Gentle Jungle (Chimney Canyon).” She said it will be hard for people to commute to work this morning.  We will check with official sources to confirm current status. Scroll down to see detailed forecast.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at 4:15 a.m.) —Snow accumulation is about 10-12 inches in Lebec and about 18 to 24 inches in Pine Mountain Club. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) cut off the electricity in Lebec at about 1:15 a.m., reports Lebec resident Chandra Mead. There is no wind at this time, just a quiet, still and cold morning. Those with Southern California Edison (SCE) still have power.

There is a 90% probability of further precipitation today, with a high of about 33º. Occasional winds are predicted, with gusts up to 30 mph.

Lebec, Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pine Mountain Club (Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019 at 2 p.m.) —It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood for Christmas eve on the mountain. Most roads in PMC were plowed and cindered Tuesday morning. Roads through Cuddy Valley and Frazier Park are all clear. The snow was one to two inches in PMC Monday night,  but there was none in Frazier Park or Lebec. Tuesday evening will be in the 20s. That will raise the hazard of ice, so please drive slowly and carefully.
