Ongoing and Upcoming

• Join Author Anna Malaika Tubbs for a virtual book signing on Thursday, Feb. 25 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Her book, The Three Mothers, is about how the mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcom X and James Baldwin shaped a nation. To register for the online virtual conversation, go to www.laul.org/3mothers/

• Each year the Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) provides a list of Hazard Reduction and Weed Abatement Contractors, This is a chance for whoever is interested in becoming a contractor. The 2021 mandatory training will be online at www.kerncountyfire.org. Look for ‘Service Provider Requirements’ under the ‘Hazard Reduction’ tab.

• Bring your icky stuff to dump at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, March 27, 9 a.m–noon, Lebec Transfer Station (300 Landfill Road). This is great if you have been using covid lockdown time for cleaning around the homestead.

• Do good from a distance! Here are a couple ways to help out without leaving home. One of our intrepid community photographers and all-around super samaritan Mel Weinstein has put out the following requests, related to his regular volunteer work with the Taft organization Shar-On, which employs and empowers homeless folks:

* If you have any type of men’s pants in size 34-36, and also belts, please let me know. Plenty of women’s clothing has already been donated. The homeless warriors are in great need of these items. I go to Taft every week to bring clothes and pick up food.
* Also, if you know anyone in the film industry: a boom mike and stand are also needed. A fledgling film production company headed by my friend Julian Wilson is starting up in Taft. This is to teach the homeless warriors about making films. Call me at 310.829.6868.

• Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the Mountain Communities are happening by Zoom at their regular times. For meeting call-in information, call Dave at 661.406.5816, or text 661.748.9525.

• Virtual Narcotics Anonymous and Al-Anon meetings are available during the covid-19 crisis. For NA, go to www.kcna.org/meetings.html or submit a ‘Join group’ request at the private ‘Quarantine NA-Kern County’ Facebook group. For Al-Anon, visit the Al-Anon WSO virtual meetings webpage at al-anon.org/al-anon-meetings/electronic-meetings/ or the ‘Al-Anon WSO’ Facebook page.
