Fatal Crash in Gorman Leaves One Dead, One Critical

UPDATE: GORMAN, CA (Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at 2:05 p.m.)— The Mountain Enterprise has confirmed with Alexander Vega Sonora’s mother, Margarita Vega, that her son was pronounced dead on Monday at 11:20 a.m. He is still connected to machines which are keeping his organs alive for the purpose of organ donation. Mrs. Vega confirmed that her son was a photographer who was with the group working in Merced, CA. They had left Merced at about 1 a.m., according to Alex’s brother Irving Sonora, and were returning home with Raul Alianza and Alex asleep in the back seat when the accident occurred. Hospital personnel were able to provide only limited information about Sonora’s condition yesterday, due to privacy laws, and could say only that Sonora was in "critical condition," which was technically correct. UPDATE: GORMAN, CA (Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at 8:33 p.m.)—The Mountain Enterprise is seeking to confirm with official sources a report that Alex ‘Vega’ Sonora has died at Henry Mayo hospital. A tipster said the group was returning from a performance in Merced, CA and that Alex was a photographer.

UPDATE: GORMAN, CA (Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at 11:45 a.m.)–The 21-year-old man who died in a vehicle collision on I-5 in Gorman Sunday, Nov. 27 has been identified by his family as well-known DJ Rowdy A. On his Facebook page Raul Alianza’s family has posted the following: "To all, Dj Rowdy A was in a fatal car accident and passed away this morning November 27th 2011 at 7:15 am we are having a candle light memorial tonight at 5pm at the Hudson theater parking lot, Thank You all for your support and prayers – DJ Rowdy A "AKA" Raul Alianza’s Family"

UPDATE: GORMAN, CA (Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at 5:55 p.m.)–The deceased passenger from the freeway collision in Gorman is Raul Alianza, 21 of Ontario, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. Alianza was ejected from the vehicle and fell to Gorman School Road below the Gorman bridge after the vehicle had slammed against the bridge barrier wall.

Henry Mayo Hospital representative Laura Young reports that the passenger previously identified in CHP reports as Alexander Vega is has been confirmed by his parents to be correctly identified as Alexander Sonora, 21 of Santa Ana. Young has confirmed that Sonora is in critical condition.

GORMAN, CA (Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at 2 p.m.)–The crash of a single vehicle on Interstate 5 in Gorman has left one man dead and another man seriously injured.

Omar Reyes, 20 of Fontana was driving a 2005 Chevy Tahoe SUV south on Interstate 5 in the #1 (fast) lane at about 6:37 a.m., approaching the Gorman bridge when, according to CHP Officer Walker, he allowed the vehicle he was driving to drift to the left, partially onto the dirt median. Reyes then turned the vehicle to the right, into southbound lanes, crossing all lanes and going over the right shoulder where it collided with the bridge barrier wall.

According to the CHP report, the collision shattered the rear and left-rear windows of the vehicle. "Two rear passengers, who were not seatbelted, were both ejected from the [vehicle] and fell down onto Gorman School Road, below. The [vehicle] traveled back across the southbound lanes, rolling onto its left side and coming to rest blocking the southbound #1 lane."

One passenger, 21 of Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire personnel. Another passenger, Alexander Vega of Santa Ana was transported by air to Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia with major injuries. A third passenger, Antonio Madrigal, 22 of Alhambra sustained moderate injuries. A fourth passenger, Ignacio Rodriguez, 20 of Ontario sustained minor injuries.

The identity of the deceased passenger has been withheld pending notification of family members. Fort Tejon CHP is continuing to investigate this collision.
