Job Offer: Seasonal Firefighter Applications Being Taken

SEASONAL FIREFIGHTERS TO BE HIRED BY KERN COUNTY

Preparations are now being made for the next season of wildfires. The process of hiring seasonal personnel will begin soon in order to have crews in place by spring. Applications for seasonal firefighting positions must be completed electronically by going to the Kern County Personnel Department website .

Prospective new employees must complete the application for “Seasonal Firefighter 1. Those seeking employment for the 2011 fire season should submit an application no later than Jan 15, 2011.

During the 2011 fire season the fire department may hire up to 60 seasonal personnel to staff its various crews. Work locations are Lake Isabella, Democrat, Lebec, Tehachapi, Edison and Keene.

The employment period for seasonal employees varies from 6-9 months depending on the individual crew. Salary range is $11.44 per hour to $15.88 per hour, dependent upon experience.

No housing is available for crews. Prospective employees must commute to work each day.

Applicants must be 18 years of age prior to their hiring date and must possess a high school diploma or GED.

In addition to fire fighting duties, each crew will be involved in brush removal and fire break construction in the mountainous areas of Kern County as part of ongoing fire protection and prevention efforts.
