A Groovy Guide to Halloween

By Cat Buckles

Spooky spectacles are being planned for groovy ghoulies on the creepiest of fall holidays this Halloween.

The monstrous merriment kicks off this weekend with Frazier Mountain High School’s Fourth Annual Haunted House, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Even before that, you can pick your pumpkins from the Frazier Park School Pumpkin Patch, a benefit for the school. The patch is on the campus, open after school hours, 2 to 4 p.m.

Then Friday, Oct. 31, on Halloween itself, children can get a head start on their Trick or Treating at the Frazier Mountain Boys & Girls Club’s Boo “2” taking place at Alice’s Attic in Lebec.

From noon to 5 p.m. children can come down to 601 Lebec Road (Unit B) for a free wrapped candy and “treasure” from Alice’s Famous Treasure Chest.

Both El Tejon School and Frazier Mountain High School are hosting Halloween Dances after school, which will let out in time for Trick or Treating.

A favorite tradition of the year is the spectacular Trunk or Treat fun at the Pine Mountain Village Gazebo area from 6 p.m. ’til the last goblin goes home. Costumed children are welcome to trick or treat at eerily imaginative displays along the village main streets.

A new and entertaining frightfest is planned by the Mountain Shakespeare Festival’s Haunted Happenings at the Old Bear Bed and Breakfast (16116 Mil Potrero Frontage Road), just down the street from Pine Mountain Village. Haunting characters and notorious fiends from Shakespeare’s will be portrayed in a playful entertainment. There will also be games, crafts, music, killer refreshments and much more. You’ll want to stop in. They’ll be open from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

You’ll also want to check in at the Fall Jamboree sponsored by the Frazier Mountain Park Community Church for a wholesome good time with tons of fun from 6 to 8 p.m..

Pine Mountain Club is throwing an adult Halloween party from 6 p.m. ’til midnight at the clubhouse, with entertainment provided by Steve Hill and a costume contest beginning at 8 p.m. The Halloween party at Rocky’s Saloon will also be Friday night, with half-off first drinks for costumed customers. The costume contest begins at 10:30 with cash prizes.

Macabre mirth continues on Saturday night for those not-so-faint at heart with Halloween parties at Sue’s Tavern and Madd Baileys. Local favorites Backlash will be playing at the Tavern, both bars will hold costume contests.

See calendar at the right for a complete list of holiday haunts.
