A ‘mulch fire’ in Neenach burns over a week

UPDATE—(Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021 at 8 p.m.)— A new outburst of flames is occurring late Tuesday in the deep “mulch” field in Western Antelope Valley where Los Angeles County Fire Department has called in water drops, used hand crews and has spread foam. The content of the mulch is in question, with some alleging that it is Los Angeles residential “green slash” amended with dried sewage. Neighbor Gerard Conroy said the property owner has acquired a water truck and is working fiercely to suppress the outbreaks. The mulch was put on the ground with the permission of the prior property owner, Conroy reports. The story below provides the background. —PH

A fire in Neenach, ignited by a vehicle just east of 300th Street West, burned for a week, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Captain Edwards at Station 77 in Gorman.

On Monday, Aug. 2, a visitor to a property on the north side of Highway 138 was driving a BMW sedan. It became stuck in mulch that had been spread over the property.
