Governor Gavin Newsom announced on July 14 that California was powered by two-thirds clean energy in 2023 (the latest year for which data is available), making it the largest economy in the world to achieve this level of clean energy.
The California Energy Commission, a government agency, says clean energy includes renewable resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass; large hydroelectric power; and nuclear energy.
