Clues to the mysterious plaque for Lisa M. Ward

Last week we told you of the mystery Eugene Dee and his pal Sara, the 12-year-old German shepherd, brought toThe Mountain Enterprise. Dee and Sara walk regularly at Frazier Mountain Park. Everyday, Sara likes to stop at a plaque that is laid into the ground not far from the children’s play area. Finally, curiosity got the better of Eugene Dee.“Who is Lisa M. Ward?” Dee asked us. “And why did she die so young, at 23?” We asked for your help to answer these questions.

Our readers did not disappoint us.

We followed the obvious first steps, such as calling the Ridge Route Communities Museum to see if they had a “Lisa M. Ward” file. Nope.

Her name also failed to show up in the museum’s “obituary book.” Most of those are pulled from the 54 years of archives published by The Mountain Enterprise. If the museum didn’t have it in their “book,” we thought, it was likely none had been published in the paper.

Because only 13 of this paper’s 54 years of history have been put into a digitally searchable format so far, we did not have access to a quick search of 1992, the year of Ms. Ward’s death.
