Community Input: Boys & Girls Club Program is a Mountain Treasure

March 23, 2012

Dear Editor:

I would like to publicly thank Kristina Graves of the Frazier Mountain Boys & Girls Club for her continued passion and dedication to the youth of our community.

The Boys & Girls is a free after-school program at Frazier Park School from 2-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In an area where so many parents are commuters who must work off the hill, it is refreshing to have a free, quality after-school program in which parents know exactly where their child is.

Kristina has personally helped my son, along with his wonderful after-school counselor Ms. Bishop, to receive topnotch enrichment activities that have added to his educational and social development this year.

I want people to know this program is not babysitting, but just the opposite. The afterschool counselors provide direct instruction and creative lesson plans that correlate with the California State Standards for the grade level they are working with.

It is such a pleasure to pick my son up after school and find him quietly working on a math sheet (provided by the club). The state standards for this particular math lesson are written on a dry erase board in the front of the room. As a parent I can immediately observe exactly what area of learning my son was receiving that day.

The counselors at the Boys & Girls Club are very professional, hard-working individuals who truly care about the children they teach.

With so much negativity surrounding our schools these days, it is important to point out what is good and right with one of our schools, the Boys & Girls Club at Frazier Park School. This program is truly making a positive difference in our community.
