‘Kvell’ is one of those great ethnic words I first heard while living in New York City, working on a degree in Urban Anthropology at New York University.
The city and its cornucopia of ethnic cultures was the real classroom for this California girl during those years. I was 19 and a newlywed. My husband was earning an MFA in New Theater. We lived in the immigrant Italian-Catholic section of Greenwich Village close to school and I commuted to a part time job at an upscale Fifth Avenue publishing house, Schocken Books.
I was the ‘diversity hire’ in a Jewish firm with its second headquarters in Tel Aviv, Israel. Our publishing list was literary classics and philosophy. Our New York staff was represented by….(please see below to view full stories and photographs)
