Emergency Closure of National Forests Issued

By Joe Pasinato, USFS

Forest Supervisor Peggy Hernandez announced an emergency closure of the entire Los Padres National Forest Tuesday, "as a result of extreme fire activity in Southern California, very low fuel moisture and fire suppression resources being stretched to the limit." Cleveland, San Bernardino and Angeles National Forest have also closed.

"This closure is necessary in order to protect public health and safety, and will be in effect until extreme fire and weather conditions subside," Hernandez said.

Private property owners within the forest are exempt from this order. County roads and state highways which run through the forest will remain open to through traffic.  Drivers are urged to use caution and to be aware of possible fire activity in the area.

While the closure is in effect, going into or being upon National Forest System lands, roads, or trails within the Los Padres National Forest will not be allowed. Violators will be subject to fines and/or possible arrest.

For more information regarding the closure or current fire activity in the forest, contact the Los Padres National Forest Fire Information Center at (805) 961-5770.
