“We got so lucky,” O’Neill Canyon resident says

Captain Matt Handy, a Kern County Fire Investigator, walked slowly along the shoulder of the southbound lane of Interstate 5 last Sunday, just north of the Lebec Road overcross that heads into El Tejon School. Handy was peering closely at what was left of the dry grass at the top of the steepest section of the infamous Grapevine, a place where thousands of vehicles overheat each day as they struggle to pull a load up the steep grade.
