High Country Gardener: If I Were A Humbug Coloring Contest

If I Were a Humbug

By Michelle Maga, for kids of all ages

If I were a humbug, Oh! The things I could do,
I’d sail through the air on wings of bright blue.
When tired, I’d rest on a tree decked with lights,
To watch children dreaming of Santa-filled nights.

If I were a humbug, no grumbler I’d be,
No Scrooge with a scowl on Christmas—Not me!
I’d be sweet. I’d be cheerful! You’d welcome my presence,
You’d say, “now that humbug really is pleasant.”

I’d change your opinion of humbugs in general,
From stingy and mean to sweet-sentimental.
You’d invite me to parties, introduce me to friends,
I’d be so entertaining you’d invite me again!

If I were a humbug, come springtime I’d fly
Out to the forest through sunlit blue skies.
I’d share with the flowers and bright evergreens
News of the Christmas delights that I’d seen.

If I were a humbug you’d see me in summer,
Right next to those tiny-quick birds they call hummers,
Sipping nectar from flowers, sweet as honey from hives,
Spreading pollen to make fruit and vegetables thrive.

In autumn I’d dart among trees dressed in gold,
And ready myself to come in from the cold,
For soon winter winds will blow through the hills,
So I seek a snug place to come in from the chills.

I’ll eat very little, be still as a mouse,
If only you’ll invite me to live at your house.
I’ll sit serenely in an out-of-the-way place,
And sleep in your room—if you’ll give me a space.

When Christmas arrives with all of its glitter,
I’ll dress in my finest; I’ll flutter and flitter
Perching on top of your pine-scented tree,
Like a twinkling bright star for all children to see.

And if you hear “Bah Humbug!”—just shrug,
And think of my smile as warm as a hug.
No humbug could be as bright or as fine
As one welcomed home for Christmas time!
