On August 31, 2024, the Phones Free School Act (AB-3216) passed legislation and moved to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk for approval. Newsom has indicated support for the legislation in recent weeks.

The Mountain Enterprise sat down with El Tejon unified School District Superintendent Sara Haflich for her thoughts on how AB-3216 would impact schools in the mountain communities.

The pending statute says that by July 1, 2026, the governing body of a school district shall develop and adopt a policy to “limit or prohibit the use by its pupils of smartphones while…(please see below to view full stories and photographs)
