Invite your friends to Lilac Festival

By Kathy Weinstein, PMS

Over 100 quilts will be on display in Lampkin Park on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s the Pine Mountain Scrappers Quilt Guild Show at Lilac Festival 2015!

The Scrappers will be showing off quilts they’ve made over the past two years. Some quilts will be on sale. There will also be a special exhibit of quilts made by Mrs. Page’s students at the Peak to Peak Mountain Charter School.

So take a short detour over to the park (it’s behind the Post Office) while you are at the Lilac Festival to see the quilts. Admission is free to all.

It’s that time of the year again. You’ll be hearing power tools, hammers and leaf blowers in Pine Mountain Village as we wake from our hibernation and prepare for another spirited spring and summer in our precious little mountain hamlet.

The clicking noises from our laptops and the rings of our telephones, however, have been sounding off for many months. Preparations for our mountain festivals start long before the events draw near.

This year’s Lilac Festival will be here in just another week, May 16-17. The vendors are plentiful and unique—some have returned for many years in a row, others are visiting for the very first time.

Come hungry, as festival food booths will be aplenty and the local restaurants will be tempting you with their Lilac Festival specials.

A very special ‘Thank You’ goes out to community volunteer Judy Keim, who took on the task of being the vendor coordinator. She is as organized as I’ve ever seen.

This year we implore everyone to arrive early on Saturday as we have a couple of very special treats.

At 10:45 a.m. the National Anthem will be sung by the immensely talented Ally Bryant, a junior at Liberty High School who just won the Distinguished Young Women of Bakersfield competition.

At 11 a.m., look to the sky: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s those spectacular and acrobatic skydiver daredevils performing mid-air stunts and landing right in front of you on the 9th hole fairway of the PMC golf course. This kicks off our annual Lilac Festival parade, followed by a full slate of entertainment in the Village Gazebo and all around town.

Some of the scheduled entertainment includes plays, dancers, aerobics, family karaoke, live blues, kids shows, laser tag, the famous quilt show and a kiddie play area. On Sunday we have a Lilac Festival Golf Tournament at 1 p.m.

Admission and parking are always free. For more information, please go to PMCLilacFestival.com or call 661.242.1996.
