Irene Margaret Quick was 67 years old when she was called to Heaven on Friday, June 26, 2015. Irene died in a motorhome accident in Pine Mountain Club, California.
Irene was born August 30, 1947 in Manitoba, Canada. In 1959 her parents, Orville and Onagh Smith, moved with Irene and her older sister (also named Onagh) to the United States. Irene became a California Certified Beautician in 1964 at the age of 17 and loved her job as a hairdresser.
When she became a mother, that was by far her favorite job. She was a single mother through the 1970s to her two daughters, Onagh and Christina. She went into the escrow industry to support her family before retiring.
Irene was a lifelong resident of Southern California and spent her early retirement as a traveling notary assisting escrow companies in Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern Counties. She did volunteer work at many animal rescues and adopted four rescue dogs, which traveled with her at all times.
Irene was always a high energy person who loved life and all of the adventures it brought.
She especially loved camping with her husband and their dogs at beaches along the California coastline.
She also loved being a doting Nana and spending time with her three grandchildren.
Irene never knew the word “no.” Her motto was always “Go Big or Go Bigger.” She spent the last five years of her life in Pine Mountain Club, enjoying the mountain community and all of its various clubs.
Her love of crafts led her to the joy of painting, knitting and other needlework. She was a valued member of the Pine Mountain Scrappers Quilt Guild and a talented lace maker with the White Sage Lace Guild.
She was very active in the Pine Mountain Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and volunteered for every Field Day Event with the Pine Mountain Amateur Radio Club.
Irene and her husband Don were also active in the Kern County Central Valley Amateur Radio Club, and the Southern California DX Club. She enjoyed ham radio so much she passed the test to achieve the top FCC license in amateur radio, Amateur Extra.
She even kept a small radio in her bright orange car. That radio traveled with her no matter where she went. Irene became the vice president of the Pine Mountain group and donated many hours as a volunteer examiner for Amateur Radio to help others become Amateur Radio Operators.
Services will be at the PMC clubhouse in the Condor Room this Sunday, July 12 at 2 p.m.
Irene’s granddaughter requests that those attending wear a small bit of purple.
In lieu of flowers please donate to Disabled American Veterans groups.
