On Thanksgiving eve the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced that OR-93, a solitary male North American gray wolf (Canis lupus), was found dead near Lebec, beside Interstate 5.

Lebec is the farthest south a wild gray wolf has been seen in California since wolves were shot and hunted to extinction in this state a century ago.

The imaginations of people across the country—including mine—were captured by the 900-mile solitary journey of this young wolf.

OR-93 was born in 2019 into the White River pack in the northeast of the state of Oregon. Sightings began to be logged and reported online in January 2021, when he unexpectedly showed up in Modoc County in…(please see below to view full stories and photographs)
