OpEd: January 6 Capitol Invasion Is Our Generation’s Pearl Harbor

Thank you for your editorial of April 29, 2022 (“Mountain Congressman Kevin McCarthy Caught On Tape”) exposing what Representative Kevin McCarthy has become.

After spending nineteen years as a member of the judicial branch of government as a Los Angeles County Superior Court Commissioner, I know how vital it is to a functioning democracy that each holder of office always fulfills their vow to defend our U.S. Constitution.

Thus, it boggles the mind that such a once-honorable man as McCarthy now kisses the ring of former president Trump and embraces his Big Lie that the election was stolen, so destructive to our democracy.
History teaches that a Big Lie has been used by the likes of Putin and Hitler to achieve their evil goals.

Yes, McCarthy, as described in your editorial, was recently caught in an enormous falsehood that would have been career-ending in normal times. But these are not the times that made America “that shining city on the hill.”

These are times that try our democracy’s soul.

It may be almost expected that politicians will prevaricate from time to time, but never when the fate of our republic hangs in the balance.

January 6, 2021 was our generation’s Pearl Harbor. Then, as now, a great symbol of America was…(please see below to view full stories and photographs)
