Prescribed burn will cause smoke in local mountain areas today

LEBEC, CA (Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 7:35 a.m.)—Today, Thursday, June 22, Kern County firefighters will continue with Public Safety Prescribed Burns. Thursday’s operation is part of the ongoing “Grapevine Flats” burn.

The burn scheduled for Thursday will be conducted west of the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, near Digier Canyon. The ignition time is scheduled for 1 pm and burning may continue into the night.

This public safety burn will help prevent a fire from extending from the roadway into the surrounding wildlands. This protects the landscape and habitat from destructive, summertime wildland fires. Additionally, these burns will reduce the likelihood that the communities of Digier Canyon and Lebec will be exposed to wildfire. The Kern County Fire Department appreciates your support and cooperation to make these critical operations a success. We ask that travelers please reduce their speed and watch for equipment and personnel along the highway during this operation.
