Relay For Life returns with big goals and big fun

Farmers’ Market, high stakes basketball, silly contests and tons of fun for a serious cause

By June Schmidt, Relay Event Leader

The Third Annual Relay For Life of the Mountain Communities is this weekend. Won’t you join us? The opening ceremony is Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. at the Frazier Mountain High School Falcon Field. The marathon lasts through the night and into the next morning. See the schedule below for the full list of activities and a note about camping.

•Come on out for all the free fun, games and entertainment. You’ll find some new and exciting treats. Karen Schott’s team, One Year Better, will be setting up a small Farmer’s Market. Did I say small? They are bringing in two truckloads of produce.

•This is a family-oriented event with activities for everyone. Entertainment will be provided by Bandit, the Mountain Squares and Gil Karson. Contests include Watermelon Eating, Dude Looks Like a Lady, Flushing Cancer, Bean Bag Toss, Musical Chairs Scavenger Hunt and Hat Toss.

•The Kiddie Korral is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday with lots of activities for the young’uns—including panning for gold, horse races and games. All of these activities are free.

•Dollar General’s portable basketball hoop offers a chance to win fabulous gift baskets from their Distribution Center at Laval Road, just $3 a shot.

•And sure, there’s plenty of food. The Southern Kern Search & Rescue will bring their much-loved breakfast burritos and burgers. Dollar General will again be grilling burgers and dogs and providing water for our event.

•The touching Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

•Leading into this 24 hour festival, 14 teams and 89 participants have raised $28,449. We set a goal of $40,000 based on raising $37,000 last year. We’ll see how close we can get! So get your cowboy or cowgirl gear on and come on out with your neighbors, friends and family to help the American Cancer Society “Give Cancer the Boot!”

•There is no charge to attend, and golf carts provide access up to the track for those who need assistance.

•A light breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided for all cancer survivors who can join us, and food will be available for everyone else.

•What is the point of all this? To fight cancer in every way possible, all year round. To give a voice to those struggling with all the insidious forms of this disease. To give cancer survivors a place to connect and rejoice that they have beaten this affliction. I can’t think of any place I would rather be to Give Cancer the Boot!
