Rock-throwing suspect apprehended — Victim surprised that the vandal was caught so quickly

Izumi Tanaka was delighted (and surprised) to get a call on Thursday, Feb. 10, from a Fort Tejon Area California Highway Patrol officer, telling her that a suspect had been apprehended in the case of a vandal who threw a rock at Tanaka’s car as she drove east on Frazier Mountain Park Road in the pre-dawn hours of January 18.

“I’m surprised how quickly they caught the guy,” Tanaka said, and then realized that she had made a premature assumption that the suspect is male.

Tanaka’s assumption was correct: the suspect is a male whose name is being withheld because he is a juvenile. Tanaka is one of at least five victims of the young vandal, who was throwing rocks down from a ridge above Frazier Mountain Park Road, usually under cover of darkness.

Darkness is what led to him being caught: in the 6 p.m. hour on Thursday, Feb. 3, Officer Greg Garcia was on duty in his CHP vehicle, traveling on Frazier Mountain Park (FMP) Road, when a rock hit the pavement just in front of him, just missing his cruiser.
