Kern County has felt the purple-tier covid clampdown this past week since the case surge has hit all of California, along with the rest of the country and the world.
But here’s a hopeful notion we can give thanks for as we gather around our household Thanksgiving tables: as we go to press, the daily Kern County case count curve appears to be flattening. There were 284 new cases reported Tuesday, compared to 309 last Thursday.
“Our community is doing a good job,” affirmed Chief Administrative Officer Ryan Alsop at the county’s covid-19 press briefing Thursday.
“I want to thank our business community, who for the past nine months have been whip-sawed by varying rules and procedures and directives, and who are struggling.”

This chart of Kern County cases by age is a good reminder to stay safe and wise with the family this holiday: while children tend to be less symptomatic and not spread the virus as much, some do catch it; and while the 65+ age group has the lowest case rate, those cases account for the vast majority of covid-related deaths.
