Soldiers honored on Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day was established on May 30, 1868, to honor the Union soldiers who died during the Civil War. The holiday was originally called “Decoration Day.” In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday in the United States, a day to honor and remember those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice. This Memorial Day weekend, community members throughout the mountain communities came together through a series of heartfelt events to commemorate the courage and lives of all service members.
