Nineteen years ago, Cuddy Valley resident John Fuess jumped on his horse and galloped through Cuddy Valley with an American flag flying. It was his way to express patriotism while most Americans and others around the world were numb with horror and anger to see the terrorist assaults on New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania splash across television screens thousands of times.

Fuess said he felt like he had to take action, to do something, rather than just sit there.

The next year, on September 11, two Cuddy Valley teens, Emily Brennan and Kate Kennedy, replicated the original ride. They continued each year until they graduated from Frazier Mountain High School. The Brennan family has maintained the tradition ever since.

This year’s ride included Shawn Nash, Petra Van de Hey, Iris Lapple, Leesa Ripling, Howard Jackson, Tyler Grosh, Evan Grosh, Christine Grosh and organizer Militsa Brennan.
