On July 8, Al Ortiz (owner of Hungry Al’s BBQ) was on a routine trip to the transfer site in Pine Mountain Club to dispose of some recyclables when movement in an adjacent tree revealed itself to be more than merely a shadow.
“There were two little baby cubs and two larger bears, more than likely females,” said Ortiz, who noted that one of the mama bears had already been collared and tagged.
