Under the Bridge

Randy Whitbread greets visitors to his camp like a cordial host. On a spring morning this year when we first met, we told him we had received a call expressing concern about homeless people under the Monterey Trail bridge. The camp is a couple of doors away from the Kern County Sheriff’s Frazier Park substation.

Whitbread, 59 said he was happy to see someone taking an interest. He speaks in a polite manner. His appearance is…(please see below to view full stories and photographs)

Randy Whitbread lived on the mountain for five years before being diagnosed with cardiovascular problems and losing his job. He counts himself among the homeless here. Others who were staying under the bridge have now found homes.
