Friday, July 3

• The City of Taft is holding a Fourth of July Fireworks and Carnival Event, (600 Main Street, Taft at the Rails to Trails Park, intersection of Main and 6th Streets). The festivities run from 6–10 p.m. with the Fireworks at 9 p.m. There will be food and craft vendors, a beer garden, bounce houses and live music. For more information call 661.765.2165.

Saturday, July 4

• Step back into time at the Old Fashioned Fourth of July & Frontier Army Days at Fort Tejon 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Enjoy an 1850s style Independence Day celebration with family and friends. You’ll enjoy pie a eating contest, tug of war, sack races and other fun games. The cannon salute is at 12 noon, sharp. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy under the oaks. • AARP invites you to help celebrate our nations birthday, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., in the Frazier Mountain Park Senior Room (3801 Park Dr., Frazier Park). See story on page 10 for details.

• Show your patriotic style on horseback by joining the Cuddy Valley 4th of July horse parade. A group will be riding through Cuddy Valley beginning at 2 p.m. See story page 10 for details and contact information.

• The first annual 4th of July Community BBQ is planned, 5 p.m., at Frazier Mountain Park. See story page 10 for details.

* A 4th of July Virtual Fireworks Show begins at 8 p.m., at the Lampkin Park baseball field in Pine Mountain, video fireworks on a giant screen with powerful audio of booming explosions. Bring a blanket and chair to enjoy the show, free for PMC residents and guests.

Sunday, July 5

• Join a slow-paced Birding Hike at Wind Wolves Preserve, 8–11 a.m. (go north on I-5 for 19.4 miles, exit west on SR 166 for 14.6 miles to 16019 Maricopa Highway, about a 40-minute drive). All ages and experience levels are welcome. Call 661.858.1115 for details.

• Be creative at Focus Central’s ‘Fun With Pastels’ with Gigi Nommensen, 10 a.m.–noon and ‘Dream Catchers’ with Sarah-Jane Owen. Tuesday, July 7

• Discover your musical talents at Focus Central by signing up for ‘Starting the Band’, a workshop led by Richard Schwagwerl. This is a two part class with the morning session from 10 a.m.–noon and the afternoon session from 1–3 p.m. at the Vineyard Campus (729 Pomona Trail, Frazier Park). • Another day of artistic fun at Focus Central workshops, during the morning session, ‘Rainsticks,’ 10 a.m. to noon, Sarah-Jane Owen will teach students to make an instrument with Yucca, leather, feathers and beads. ‘Acrylic Painting’ with Gigi Nommensen, 1–3 p.m., shows kids 5 and older how to create a masterpiece on canvas.
